Smart Blade is doing extensive research in the field of wind turbine blade manufacturing. We mostly focus on manufacturing issues which affect the aerodynamic performace of wind turbine blades. Our latest work is focused on the effect of distributed point roughness and its effects of the performance of wind turbines. We have performed wind tunnel measurements and computer simulations in order to identify and quantify this effect. In addition to that we have studdied and analyzed the effects of roughness generated during the manufacturing process (e.g. due to spray painting) as well as the effects of the minor shape deviations that occur during the grinding process of the blades during manufacturing. Smart Blade is committed to high level scientific research. Through our research projects we develop aerodynamic solutions for the existing wind turbines but also innovative concepts for the large wind turbines of the future. Our latest results in wind turbine active flow control via flexible flaps were recently presented at the 48th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition in Orlando, Florida (Jan. 4-7, 2010). Smart Blade is currently developing several aerodynamic flow control solutions and aerodynamic performance enhancing solutions. However we also offer consulting services to customers with specific and often extraordinary technical problems. One of our latest projects was the aerodynamic investigations for the project “Stern de Südens”.
